The Day of the Dead Festival in Puerto Vallarta has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years, becoming one of the city’s most emblematic celebrations. Did you know that Puerto Vallarta holds the title of having the Tallest Catrina Skull in the World?
That’s right, for two consecutive years (2022 and 2023) this monumental skull of more than 27 metres high has stolen the show and has been recognised by the Guinness World Records.
In addition to this impressive catrina, the entire Malecón is filled with altars of the dead and more than 80 giant skulls decorated with different motifs, each one more impressive than the last. Don’t miss the festive atmosphere, the lights, and the music that envelopes every corner of the Malecon during these days.
Live the tradition like a local
One of the most special things about spending Day of the Dead in Puerto Vallarta is that you get to experience the tradition in an authentic way. On November 2nd, locals make an obligatory visit to the cemeteries, where they honour their loved ones. One of the best-known cemeteries is the colonia 5 de Diciembre, which is transformed into a real family celebration. While locals place flowers and candles on the graves of their loved ones, outside you can enjoy Mexican snacks, fresh cempasúchil flowers and even mariachis playing in honour of the deceased.
